Happenings Around the Shop

It’s been quite awhile since my last post and a lot has happened here at SPITwSPOTS. To summarize, we now have 2 T1s and are looking forward to a productive summer. The last couple of months have had a lot of ups and downs but over all we have made some good progress. For example we have been perfecting our method of using dual radio meshboxes to create more redundancy, stability, and higher throughput. We are reaching more and more remote locations all the time, and are beginning to focus our attention towards “the folks across the bay” By the end of summer the SPITwSPOTS Network SHOULD cover a good portion of the Kachamak Bay area!

Also we are currently pioneering a brand new mesh topology which merges our 2 networks (the backhaul point to point and the client mesh networks) into a single cohesive, flexible, and fault tolerant mesh. At the moment we have several “KEY” P-t-P (Point to Point) links and if any one of them goes down large portions of our net instantly loose internet access until the links are restored, this despite the fact that the client side mesh has multiple links spanning the same area. The new system we are developing will take advantage of these extra links, and allow the network to route around “dead” P-t-P links in real-time! We are currently testing this new technique. If there are no unforeseen obstacles we COULD have it implemented through out the entire mesh within a couple of weeks.
